| I voted for yes. You just can't be a "true" anime fan otherwise. It's very obvious (nor do you've any rights to complain about a show or a thing). But it doesn't mean you've to pay for every show you watch, though. Pirate it if you like it then purchase it too, to support the work. |

| i don't think i ever paid for anime, i mean, i got macross in vhs but that's about it (the spanish dub is susprisingly good, or at least miles better than the 'murican one). also most of the stuff i watch is old, so good luck finding those legally. take paranoia agent for example, not available anywhere. |

| As I've said many times, all those streaming services give little to no revenue 2 the anime studios (even if they claim they do). On top of that, the service crunchyroll gives is trash! The subs tend 2 b rushed so they tend 2 have lots of errors. The quality drops greatly if u don't have super fast internet. Fansubs tend to do a better job at subbing than crunchyroll. If u rly want 2 support the anime industry, buy manga and merch! |
| Spend hundreds of dollars annually as a college student to watch anime. Spend even more to buy the manga... Yeah, no. Why would any college student be willing to plunge even deeper into debt? Once I have a stable job and am not living off instant noodles I'll get back to you. Without pirates there would be even less sales then there are already. It's fine though, some people just have a moral obligation to buy anime/manga or else they feel dirty. But the real way to "support" the creators often times is just buying merch. Which I do every now and then. But please feel free to look down upon us pirates. Maybe if host sites tried a little harder to compete with streaming sites more people would be willing. Like Shonen Jump for example! It's like 2 dollars a month now to be able to read anything on their site. That's all I gotta say. Plus I've seen more anime than most people on this site, so yeah I'm a real anime fan. I'm just a pirate as well, does that make me any less of a fan? I think you're messing up enthusiasts with fans. |

| You could argue money is a form of investment to show how much of a fan you are just as you can do the same for time. But it is by no means the only way to demonstrate that you're an anime fan. For example if I spent 10 years legally watching anime on Toonami but never bought a single piece of merch I should still be able to claim I'm an anime fan. |

| Well, I pay for most anime and buy the merch, but I don't agree with the statement. Sure Crunchyroll isn't horribly expensive, but if you live by yourself it's harder to manage all the expenses. The only thing that's really needed for you to be an anime fan is that you claim to be one and enjoy the medium, like I'm a fan of murder but I don't murder people to prove it, I just claim to find it interesting. Bad example, ik, but either way you just have to claim to like something and actually like something about it to be a fan of it, you shouldn't have to prove it. |

Or if I know my dollars are going directly to the creation of a new season of a good anime. This is not because I'm not a fan but because of the mismanagement of said money. |

| Being a fan is about enthusiasm/liking for something. It has nothing to do with financial investment/activity. You could argue that a person isn't being a "responsible anime fan" if all they do is pirate, but that's a different story. |

| I used to watch anime on Kissanime before the site decided to get rid of local downloading for the episodes. I just didn't feel like have to go onto openload or whatever else to download shows. I also got tired of keeping up with whatever the new official site was. Then, I switched to trying to watch my shows legally. This was done mostly on Crunchyroll and Netflix. I've recently somewhat switched back to piracy, although not Kissanime, because Crunchyroll's video player continues to suck. It also doesn't help that neither Crunchyroll and Netflix have some shows, like Honey and Clover's english sub, that I want to watch. That said, I do try to watch legally before I consider piracy. In general, I think watching anime legally should come first. However, if, for whatever reason, you decide to pirate a show I don't think you should be criticized for it. Well, maybe unless you're pirating a free-to-watch show. Anyway, to answer the OP's question, I don't think piracy makes you less of an anime fan. I don't watch him too much, anymore, but one of Digibro's videos on piracy really stuck with me. If the legal options aren't up to snuff, consumers will, inevitably, find other ways to watch anime. I know it wasn't asked, but I don't pirate most of the manga I read. I don't read many manga, but the only one I do pirate is One Piece for, I think, obvious reasons. I purchase the only other manga I actually read: Vinland Saga and Yotsuba&! |

Like yeah I hate Funimation but I still swallowed my pride and bought the DVD Bluray combo set of Shakugan no Shana III because I can't help myself. Just glad you can turn off subs when watching their DVDs or Blurays tbh |

| I pay for manga and merch and a couple of BDs. I don't have an extensive collection of any of the three but I like supporting ecchi stuff in particular, makes me feel a bit better about putting what I can behind my favorite type of entertainment, albeit I don't really/if ever toss money towards non-ecchi series. Mostly pirate in general, though. I'm a fucking broke early-20s guy who rents out his own place, who also refuses to give anything resembling support to CR ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don't feel bad about pirating in the slightest, industry issues aren't going to be my issues, and I just feel better supporting things I actually want to support. Like anime tiddie. Also, speaking of dogshit services ran by dogshit people, is this an extension of the "You're only a true anime fan if you pay for everything you watch" BS that the PR department from Crunchyroll constantly harasses people about on Twitter? >_> |

| I only paid for Manga. Anime BD is too overpriced and Legal streaming is not available in my country (not blocked), and stream service ask you to subscribe to multiple places at once instead of only 1 or 2. So torrents sounds better in this case. Manga wise it's pretty sucks to wait for the Manga gets licensed. I only buy whatever i could buy in my reading list. Buying from outside region is a hassle and cost way too much for our poor country. |
| In all honesty, I stream on illegal websites and do torrents yet I still buy merchandises whenever I can to support the series I've liked the most. But all in all, all of us do support anime in our own ways and have every right to call ourselves a fan of it. |
| On the flip side of what HyperL said: imagine thinking that freeloaders on a commercial entertainment medium are entitled to the same amount of respect as those who sacrifice to contribute to that medium's continuing success and continued existence. I somewhat agree with the definition laid out here: Recall that "fan" is short for "fanatic," i.e. someone so devoted to something that they're willing to make non-rational decisions and sacrifices. That certainly doesn't describe the "Why should I pay for what I can get for free? Other people's money will subsidize my entertainment" crowd. Though I would soften that a bit and say that an anime fan is at least emotionally (if not financially) invested in the industry's success, e.g. they're too young to have a job, or live in an impoverished / chronically underserved region, but still hope for the industry's continued success, and attempt to direct people to legal/paying avenues wherever possible, while working towards being able to contribute themselves in the future. Or failing that, they at least keep quiet, refrain from mocking those who pay as "suckers," and not attempt to promote moocher culture -- and especially refrain from trying to convince paying customers to switch to piracy instead. I mean, is it really too much to ask from "fans" of a medium that they not attempt to actively sabotage the industry that produces it, like a certain YouTuber we're all familiar with? | Ok, so i do not pay for watching anime or reading manga except maybe for paying for cable and/or satellite and watching anime on TV back when i didn't even know what anime was. But, i do pay for anime merchandise(ok, so more like only Touken Ranbu merchandise up untill recently when i couldn't resisit and bought a bunch of Bungou Stray Dogs merchandise) I regret not having bought any Shoukoku no Altair, Servamp, D.Gray-man Hallow and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! merchanidse when i had the chance though, because i didn't want to make too many expenses because i already had a lot of Touken Ranbu pre-orders in the past, but i've decided if i really like an anime and i find merchandise of it from official shops that i'll buy it from now on no matter what! So i don't think i can be considered 100% a pirate because i still contribute, even if only to a single franchise. |
